Measuring engagement
26 JUNE - engagement STATS
|
In the past week, I have 'encouraged' students to a greater level of engagement with the introduction of some detentions for uncompleted work. Consequently, 'cognitive' engagement (measured through survey completion) has increased.
|
At this stage (18 JuNE), i have 3 areas of engagement to measure:
1) number of students 100% engaged versus not engaged (speeches)
measured by number of speeches to outside source, class and individual's passion for topic.
fully engaged - 9
JS, JD and JB selected to make their speech as part of the school's debating team which I coach. This counted as a 'real world context' and lifted the level of their performance.
JT selected to present to his Sailing Club but when it fell through he re-grouped (with the support of his family) and chose to prepare a speech with reference to methyl bromide issue in Tauranga.
AJ and LF are formally booked to speak to Tauranga Transport Committee on the first day of the school holidays.
MS presented (and won) at Super 8 competitive schools event.
MH prepared a speech to his grandparents and friends in their nursing home which he is to video and share with me.
ND is preparing to upload his speech to Youtube and share with the electoral council.

partially engaged - 5
SB, MK, TH, EL, RL have all presented speeches of a medium to high quality to the class.
an element of 'laggard' (31-14 = 16)
The remaining students are 'still finishing' or 'will do it next week' type excuses suggesting a lack of engagement or in a few cases, a level of engagement that is driving them to achieve a higher standard through buying themselves an extra week.
(2) number of students cognitively engaged in novel
measured by number who have completed chapter quizzes through Google Forms. I will collect a weekly snapshot of how many students have responded and follow up in conversation or otherwise with students who have not completed surveys.
18 June 2017 - Chapter 1 - 16
18 June 2017 - Chapter 2 - 11
18 June 2017 - Chapter 3 - 8
18 June 2017 - Chapter 2 - 11
18 June 2017 - Chapter 3 - 8
Reflection: Out of a class of 31, this is suggesting that not even 50% are engaged with this study at present. My conclusion is that we are 'running late' and that at week 7 out of a 10 week term, their energy is low. How to inject more energy into this topic? Well...I had planned to use the Brown Eyes/Blue Eyes survey but am awaiting 1/3 of parents responses (see below)...
(3) NUMBER OF PARENTS ENGAGED IN STUDENTS' LEARNING
measured by number of responses to parent survey. (NB I am having to follow up a significant number.)
4) number of students completing engagement surveys
(5) debating club
8 students from this class now regularly attend Debating Club 3-5 times per week. (MH, TH, AJ, JS, JB, GP, K, JD)
This counts as approximately 32 hours of 'agency' per week for the class.
With interest from a further 4 (CH, CH, EL, JL)
